Spring is here, a season of renewal, growth, and transformation. After months of cold and stagnation, nature doesn’t hesitate. It bursts back to life, unapologetically shedding the old to make way for the new. What if we did the same with our careers and mindset?
In the spring, we open the windows, let the fresh air in, and clear out what no longer serves us. But while we’re taking care of our “spring cleaning”, how often do we make time to do the same for our careers, our mindset, and our goals?
Growth doesn’t happen in cluttered spaces, whether that’s a messy desk, an overwhelming to-do list, or a mind filled with limiting beliefs and outdated fears. If your environment, routines, and mindset are crowded with distractions and baggage, there’s no room for something new to develop. Before something new can take root, you need to clear out what’s holding you back, plant the right seeds, nurture them, and have patience while they grow.
Let’s break it down.
Step 1: The Spring Cleaning Phase. Clearing Out the Clutter
Before we talk about growth, let’s talk about making room for it. Too often, we focus on adding new things (new habits, new skills, new goals), without clearing out the outdated, the ineffective, and the downright toxic. But just like an overstuffed closet, if there’s no space, nothing new can fit.
What’s cluttering your professional and personal life?
- Limiting beliefs (“I’m too old to change careers,” “I don’t have what it takes.”)
- Outdated habits (reactive work, saying yes to everything, avoiding difficult but necessary conversations)
- Toxic commitments (meetings that drain you, projects that no longer align with your values)
- Physical clutter (a chaotic workspace that creates mental fog)
📝 Spring Cleaning Exercise:
- Make a list of everything that feels heavy, outdated, or misaligned in your life.
- Ask: “If I were starting fresh today, would I keep this in my life?”
- If not, it’s time to prune it away. Delegate it, rethink it, or let it go.
By making space, you create fertile ground for something better.
Step 2: Planting the Seeds. What Do You Want to Grow?
Once you’ve cleared the space, it’s time to be intentional about what you want to cultivate in your life.
But here’s the mistake many people make: they plant too many seeds at once.
A garden overrun with weeds isn’t productive; it’s just overwhelming. In career growth, those weeds are distractions, unnecessary commitments, and the fear of failure. They choke out the meaningful progress you could make, leaving you exhausted and stuck. Prune wisely, or the things that don’t truly matter will take over your time and energy. The same goes for your growth. If you try to tackle ten new habits or goals at once, you’ll end up in a tangled mess, and nothing will truly flourish.
🌱 What’s one or two things you want to grow this season?
- A new skill you’ve been putting off learning?
- A bold conversation that could open doors?
- A small daily habit that could improve your energy and focus?
Pick a few and commit. Growth doesn’t come from frantic effort, but from consistent attention.
Step 3: The Growth Process—Creating the Right Environment
A seed won’t grow if it’s planted in the wrong soil.
Your career growth depends on:
- Supportive people. Are you surrounded by those who challenge and uplift you?
- A growth mindset. Are you willing to embrace the discomfort of learning and change?
- Consistency. Are you tending to your goals regularly, or just when you feel motivated?
Want to speed up your growth? Surround yourself with the right influences, cut out distractions, and make learning part of your daily environment. It’s like fertilizer for your personal growth.
Step 4: The Patience Factor. Trusting the Process
Spring reminds us that transformation isn’t instant.
Flowers don’t bloom overnight, and neither does meaningful change. The sun is out for a while, the snow melts, and you bring out your shorts and flip-flops. You feel you’ve made it. But then, a dump of snow; a step backwards. Damn it! Be patient and trust the process. If you clear the clutter, plant the right seeds, and create the right conditions, growth is inevitable. Just like that elusive sun and warm weather.
Your challenge: What’s one thing you’ll clear out? And what’s one seed you’ll plant this week?
Ready to Create the Right Conditions for Growth?
Growth doesn’t happen in isolation. Just like plants thrive with the right sunlight, water, and care, your career growth speeds up when you have the right systems to support you. Surrounding yourself with mentors, coaches, and a strong network can make the difference between slow progress and real transformation. If you want to make real progress in your career, let’s talk. Quotation that I’ve been pondering
James Clear wrote:
“Compete externally and you compare. Compete internally and you improve.”
It’s easy to measure ourselves against others; their careers, their achievements, their highlight reels. But real progress happens when you focus on your own growth. Instead of chasing someone else’s path, ask yourself: ”Am I better than I was yesterday?”
Compete with yourself, and the results will take care of themselves.
Journal prompt
“Is your default setting to defend your limitations or expand your possibilities? What might it look like to shift to an expansion of possibilities if you’re not there?”
