Hey Reader! 👋🏻👋🏻👋🏻
I don’t know about you, but for me it felt like this week just flew by so quickly! Life can get so busy as we try to juggle all the balls.
I’ve got my work out for me for the next few evenings as well, as I had a dump truck drop off 14 cubic yards of garden soil that I need to move to various gardens around the house. And I need to move it all by hand. I guess it’ll be a great way to get some exercise in!
We are putting in some new gardens, as we keep looking to improve our ability to grow more of our own food. It’s a fun and rewarding undertaking, even if it is a lot of work.
Hope that you had an amazing weekend!
This week, we’ll explore how to deal with the incessant change in the world of work – and how to reframe it as an amazing opportunity to transform your work.
Let’s dive in! 💪🏻

Chaos In The World Of Work And The Incredible Opportunities That Presents
Did you know that over 70% of jobs today didn’t exist 20 years ago?
The workplace is changing at a break-neck pace. As the pace of technological change speeds up, are you keeping up? Falling behind? Or looking to leap ahead?
How you answer this question is important.
Earlier this week, OpenAI released their newest model, GPT-4o. This new model allows you to interact with it in a more natural manner, besides being much quicker to respond. The model is multimodal, meaning it can take in audio, video, and text as inputs. I’ve been experimenting with it a bit, and it seems to be a pretty big upgrade that is likely to further change the way people work.
I also got access to Microsoft Copilot this week and have been exploring how that tool can help unlock my productivity.
I’m mentioning these tools because their advancements highlight a crucial aspect of today’s work environment: the increasing pace of technological change and its profound impact on our daily work lives.
Why it matters
The pace of change in today’s work environment is unbelievable. Technology has become such an integral part of many people’s day-to-day work that these changes are having a massive impact on how people are spending their time and energy at work.
The rate of change will not slow down. In fact, it is likely to keep speeding up as these tools and technologies continue to expand upon what is possible.
Many people struggle to keep up with the pace of technological change, and that directly impacts on their work life. Many of you in my audience are mid to late career, and may feel overwhelmed or stressed by all the changes in the way you’re now having to work.
My goal is to provide you with actionable tips and strategies to help you thrive at work. AI is rapidly becoming a technology that is likely to have a major impact, so it feels important to explore. Many people are fearful of the technology and its potential impacts.
Technologies like this are a double-edged sword; they bring benefits but also carry costs and risks.
For example:
- Nuclear Fusion: Unlocked the ability to produce a lot of energy, but also facilitated the creation of nuclear weapons.
- Social Media: Made it easy to connect and share information but also enabled the spread of toxicity and division.
- Internet: Allowed instant access to information but also gave rise to cybercrime and online privacy concerns.
- Mobile Technology: Made communication instantaneous but also contributed to problems like addiction and an expectation of always being available.
The point is, all technologies come with trade-offs. But wishing the technology away isn’t helpful. These technologies have contributed to increased global living standards and lifted many people out of poverty.
Once the toothpaste is out of the tube, you aren’t likely to have much success putting it back in.
How to deal with all the change
So, how do you choose to respond to these changes? Will you ignore them and hope they go away? Or will you get curious, set aside your fears, and learn about them?
I believe that those who do not actively seek to learn and grow risk falling behind. This is especially relevant for individuals later in their careers who may have found success in their established methods of working. The rapid pace of change today challenges the sustainability of this approach; it cannot last. Those who resist embracing new ways of working will be left behind.
I hope you’ll decide to embrace this pace of change and use it as an opportunity to grow and develop yourself.
To smooth the path of adaptation, let’s delve into some tips.
Practical tips for adapting to change
- Follow your curiosity. What areas in your industry are undergoing major shifts you find intriguing? If you can explore areas that interest you, it is much easier – and likely even fun! – to learn.
- Understand your strengths and your values. Seek a way to align what you’re naturally good at and what is important to you with changes that are underway. It is crucial to maintain alignment between your work and who you are as a person.
- Set learning goals. Treat your professional development seriously. So many people “stop learning” after they finish their formal schooling, and then “wing it” throughout their career. That might have worked when things were more stable, but isn’t likely to work in the future.
- Build something relevant. You don’t need anyone’s permission. One of the best ways of learning something is by doing it. So find a problem you think needs to be fixed and that you can figure out a way to make better, and then build a solution. The worst case is you’ll learn something new. But you may also create a path to an exciting opportunity.
- Talk to people. If you’re interested in learning about something, engage with people who’re doing something in that space. Don’t be needy or demanding, but just engage them with curiosity. Many people love to talk about what problems they’re working on solving.
Conclusion
While the rapid shifts occurring in the workplace may feel overwhelming and somewhat frightening to some, they open the door to a multitude of opportunities that were previously unimaginable. With the right mindset, we can all adapt and thrive amidst these changes, using them as stepping stones to create and seize new opportunities.
The treasure is always found in the chaos.
Rather than dread the fact that things are changing quickly and that you need to adopt new technologies and methods of working, reframe your perceptions. These changes can be exciting, offering all kinds of interesting new opportunities to those willing to dive in, learn, and explore.
It is a wonderful era to reimagine what your work can look like; the possibilities are endless.
I hope you make the most of the opportunity in front of you!
Quotation that I’ve been pondering
“Don’t wish it was easier, wish you were better. Don’t wish for fewer problems; wish for more skills. Don’t wish for less challenge; wish for more wisdom.”
That’s a powerful insight from Jim Rohn. There’s no such thing as a ‘problem-free life’. Instead of wishing for that, improve your ability to deal with the problems you encounter. As you do, you’ll get to encounter more interesting problems, which is the whole point.
